Techniques we used during the semester

  • egghunting
    • find them in the classroom / court
    • say where they are
    • what is inside
    • count them

  • speak in Russian
    • to feel what children feel when they learn a new language and don't know the words yet
    • using pictures to learn the names of the animals
    • children have to point on the picture whose name they hear
    • what's missing? - say the name of the animal whose picture is not there with the others

  • pointing on things with a long, coloured plastic stick
    • find things in the classroom and point on them
    • colours, shapes, have a certain sound in the name of it etc.

  • situation game with numbers
    • play in pairs or groups of 3-4
    • think of a situation and act it out saying only numbers (1, 2, 3, 4,...)
    • others have to guess what the situation is

  • decide!
    • there are 2 sides, children say 2 things (only words, e. g. dogs or cats, cinema or theatre)
    • they have to decide which side they prefer and without saying anything, they have to stand in one side
    • they mustn't communicate or say which side they are on - if they know the others well, it is easier to guess what they choose
    • when everybody decided to stand in one side they can discuss which side is which word

  • the evolution game
    • first everybody is an egg (knocking on their own head and say 'egg, egg, egg...')
    •  2 eggs meet - rock, paper, scissors - the winner becomes a chicken (imitate the movements of a chicken and say 'chicken, chicken, chicken...')
    • 2 chickens meet - rock, paper, scissors - the winner becomes an eagle (imitate the movements of an eagle and say 'eagle, eagle, eagle...')
    • 2 eagles meet - rock, paper, scissors - the winner becomes superman (stop and just be superman)

  • movements in the hulahoops
    • pairs stand in a hulahoop and make up a movement, in every hulahoop there is a movement
    • try to memorize them because in a few seconds they have to move to the next hulahoop and do the movement which was created in there

  • names and poses
    • they stand in a circle and speak one by one
    • e. g. 'My name is Jade and my pose is THIS.' the next person says: 'Her name is Jade and her pose is THIS, and my name is Rose and my pose is THIS.' the next one says: 'Her name is Rose and her pose is THIS, and my name is...'

  • cat and dog chasing game
    • there is a cat, when the cat reaches a person, they have to say 'cat'
    • the cat is moving person by person
    • after a while a dog appears (saying 'dog, dog, dog...')
    • the dog has to catch the cat

  • the culture umbrella
    • stand under the colourful umbrella and say something that comes to your mind in connection with culture
    • only 1 person stands there

What is TPR?

Where is it from?
TPR stands for Total Physical Response and was created by Dr. James J Asher. It is based upon the way that children learn their mother tongue. Parents have 'language-body conversations' with their children, the parent instructs and the child physically responds to this. The parent says, "Look at mummy" or "Give me the ball" and the child does so. These conversations continue for many months before the child actually starts to speak itself. Even though it can't speak during this time, the child is taking in all of the language; the sounds and the patterns. Eventually when it has decoded enough, the child reproduces the language quite spontaneously. TPR attempts to mirror this effect in the language classroom.

How can I use it in class?

In the classroom the teacher plays the role of parent. She starts by saying a word ('jump') or a phrase ('look at the board') and demonstrating an action. The teacher then says the command and the students all do the action. After repeating a few times it is possible to extend this by asking the students to repeat the word as they do the action. When they feel confident with the word or phrase you can then ask the students to direct each other or the whole class.

It is more effective if the students are standing in a circle around the teacher and you can even encourage them to walk around as they do the action.

When should I use it?
TPR can be used to teach and practise many things.
  • Vocabulary connected with actions (smile, chop, headache, wriggle)
  • Tenses past/present/future and continuous aspects (Every morning I clean my teeth, I make my bed, I eat breakfast)
  • Classroom language (Open your books)
  • Imperatives/Instructions (Stand up, close your eyes)
  • Storytelling
It can be adapted for all kinds of teaching situations, you just need to use your imagination!

Why should I use it in the classroom?
  • It is a lot of fun, students enjoy it and it can be a real stirrer in the class. It lifts the pace and the mood.
  • It is very memorable. It really helps students to remember phrases or words.
  • It is good for kinaesthetic learners who need to be active in the class.
  • It can be used in large or small classes. It doesn't really matter how many students you have as long as you are prepared to take the lead, the students will follow.
  • It works well with mixed-ability classes. The physical actions get across the meaning effectively so that all the students are able to understand and use the target language.
  • It doesn't require a lot of preparation or materials. As long as you are clear what you want to practise (a rehearsal beforehand can help), it won't take a lot of time to get ready.
  • It is very effective with teenagers and young learners.
  • It involves both left- and right-brained learning.
